Judge shorts length while sitting and stepping as well as standing. A hem that looks right in a mirror can expose more thigh or pull uncomfortably during the movements you actually make.
Keep waistband position consistent
Wear the shorts where the waistband is intended to sit. Use the normal belt if applicable, without pulling the garment lower just to gain leg coverage. Compare the hem with a familiar comfortable pair at the same waistband position.
Three positions, three different questions
| Position | Question |
|---|---|
| Standing relaxed | Does the hem give the coverage you want without changing waistband position? |
| Seated on a stable chair | Does the hem ride higher than you want or tighten across the thighs? |
| Ordinary step and bend | Can the seat and thigh move without pulling the waistband or cuffs? |
Chase’s Ridge return and Randy’s Arco return were driven by length preferences. Their requested extra inches are not catalog measurements. Alex’s Ridge account adds a separate issue: a correct waist with tight thighs.
Ask for the dimension you actually need
If the listing lacks an inseam, ask for the exact size’s measurement. Do not substitute another model’s dimension or assume every color/edition is unchanged. Use the Ridge–Arco comparison only after the hem works; neither fiber blend promises more coverage.
Reject the pair if your preferred coverage requires an awkward waistband position or restricted movement. Choose the usable length first, then compare pocket layout and fabric feel.
